2017 Musikmesse - Video coverage and debrief - The Guitar Channel

With the NAMM, the Musikmesse is one of the key events of the musical instrument industry and what revolves around (sound system, lights, etc.). The part reserved for the guitar is increasingly reduced year after year which diminishes the interest of coming for visitors fans of six-string. Nevertheless this fair continues to offer a great concentration of people who are present for 4 days in Frankfurt.

Mika Tyyskä is a very original guitar player with a very personal approach about his music. Not only he is writing and playing music but he also take care of all the visual aspect of his art with his alter ego Mr Fastfinger. His latest album Spirit Rising is shock full of cool music.

It's a rare opportunity to do an interview with both the musician and his luthier at the same time. Here's below an interview with guitar player Mika Tyyskä (aka Mr Fastfinger) with his luthier Juha Ruokangas. It was done during the 2nd edition of the Holy Grail Guitar Show.

Here's a Seth Baccus interview done during the 2015 Holy Grail Guitar Show. I was very impressed by the quality of the instrument brought by Seth in Berlin (see the photos below).

Sustainable Guitar Review: the Ethiq in bamboo by Alquier Guitar

The guitar tested in this video is the electric model Ethiq range presented in Berlin during the 2nd edition of the Holy Grail Guitar Show by luthier Jean-Yves Alquier. The characteristic of this range is that it is made of bamboo from 65% to 100% as in the case of the guitar tested in this video. So this might be one of the first sustainable guitar from a luthier.

We clearly see in the photo below how the body of the guitar is composed.

Adriano Sergio interview (Ergon Guitars) at the 2015 Holy Grail Guitar show

Here's the interview done with Portuguese luthier Adriano Sergio from Ergon Guitars during the second edition of the Holy Grail Guitar Show. I was seduced by the organic shapes of Adriano's guitars and by the quality of the lutherie.

The 2015 Holy Grail Guitar Show was held the weekend of October 31 and November 1, 2015 in Berlin. This second edition of the show presented a selection of 115 luthiers from around the world. There was a lot to please the eyes and ears. You only need to watch the 5min video zapping below to be convinced.

Here're the luthiers I interviewed during the week-end in Berlin. The full video will be made available to the Backstage Pass owners as soon as they are edited.

Here's Egon Rauscher interview, luthier for SoulTool Guitars. He was one of the 115 selected guitar builders presenting their work at the 2015 Holy Grail Guitar Show in Berlin. The quality of the instruments from Soultool is top notch as the design which looks pretty cool.

My take on the SoulTool guitars
I really dig the design Egon found for his instruments. It's modern but with that classic vibe we all cherish.

Francisco Rodriguez is the luthier behind FranFret Guitars (www.franfret.net). He was already an exhibitor at Guitares au Beffroi guitar show in France this year but it's at the 2015 Holy Grail Guitar Show in Berlin, Germany that The Guitar Channel took the opportunity to interview him.

This video is accessible to all because FranFret is a Pro Backstager on The Guitar Channel.
It was still early on that Saturday morning when we did the interview so neither Francisco or I are smiling yet.

The Holy Grail Guitar Show is not only the best luthier guitar show in the world (yes, I mean it) it's also a great opportunity to attend to a great selection of conferences.

The Guitar Channel is back in Berlin for the 2nd Holy Grail Guitar Show

In fact it is as if the 2nd edition of the Holy Grail Guitar Show (www.holygrailguitarshow.com) was organized especially for me. Indeed, you cannot help but notice that the visual part of this year is very oriented toward the psychedelic sixties which fit perfectly with my legendary floral shirts and my hair (usually) long!

Here I am last year in Berlin interviewing the legendary Ken Parker with...

After several Musikmesse, a first NAMM show in January, the Holy Grail Guitar Show, and various others guitar shows in France, I am very pleased to announce that for the first time I will cover the Montreal Jazz Festival! So here I am in full swing to organize the ten days that I will spend there.

On my program

  • Interviews with musicians programmed on the festival
  • Meetings with local luthiers, and God knows there are some very very good ones!
  • Contact catches with professional guitar for business development
  • And of course concerts!
If you are on site and / or you have contacts to recommend me and / or you wish we meet, let me know it will be with great pleasure. Some of you know that I lived 11 years in Montreal so to return there with The Channel Guitar is a sort of homecoming for me. Can't wait to be back in Quebec!! Pierre. Well, here we are, the American adventure of The Guitar Channel starts in a few hours! The NAMM show means a lot for musicians in general and especially for guitarists as it is a major event that has strong impact, especially on our respective gear fantasies! Indeed it is often during this event dedicated to the music industry in Los Angeles, California in January that are launched instruments, amps, effects, accessories, etc. that will make us dream throughout the year.

Logistics and planing

For me beeing present at the NAMM is the opportunity to meet musicians, luthiers and manufacturers impossible to interview otherwise because they do not come to France. As for the Musikmesse where I go every year, I tried to optimize my time on setting up of a maximum of appointments while keeping some availability for what is difficult to predict: an impromptu interview with star, a cool demo to shoot, the discussions with the countless pros of the music business that will be on site, etc. The airfare and hotel are booked long time. Wanting absolutely to limit the budget, I opted to avoid to rent a car, so I took a relatively hotel near the Convention Center allowing me to go on foot. MapNAMM

The interviews planned

I will not list here the appointments already set because I know how that can change at the last moment. Suffice it to say that there will be big names of the six (and four!) strings, great guitar manufacturers and effects and instrument makers. I also intend to shoot some video chronicle with my "special envoys" on the spot: they are musicians I've interviewed in the past and who are on site. This is an opportunity to have multiple views of the same event. As this is my first NAMM, I'm also going there in observation mode. Indeed although my past experience during several Musikmesse allow me to anticipate in part how it will happen, everyone agrees that the Winter NAMM (as opposed to Summer NAMM being held in Nashville summer) is a whole other planet. We'll see.

Sophie Dockx interview from Dorian Guitars

There is not a lot of women in the world of lutherie so I am always ready to jump on one when I meet one. So here's a Sophie Dockx interview. Sophie was at the Holy Grail Guitar show for Dorian Guitars. She is guitar luthier but for Dorian she is the designer of the instruments.

Here's a special post to mention all the guitar builders who support what I do on The Guitar Channel by subscribing to an annual Backstage Pass. You have no idea what it means to me when a guitar builder shows his appreciation for my work.

Jens Ritter instruments – 2014 Holy Grail Guitar show

Jens Ritter is one of the guitar designer you know even though you don't know his name for sure. That's usually how popular his designs are. I was very happy to meet him and do an interview during the show (see an extract below).

Relish Guitars are made out of aluminium. I had already heard about their product and thought it was interesting to learn some more about their technology.

Ulrich Teuffel is one of the reason I came to Berlin for the Holy Grail Guitar Show. In fact when we met earlier this year in Francfort for the Musikmesse, he told me at the end of the interview we did there that I really should come to Berlin. At the time it seemed like a distant project I was not sure I could finance.

Below are a small selections of the 200+ photos I took during the Holy Grail Guitar Show.

It was one of the highlight of the week-end in Berlin to do a Ken Parker interview during the Holy Grail Guitar Show. Ken is a living legend amongst guitar builders, he is as famous as he is nice to meet and easy to talk to.
