Working a Wes Montgomery lick thanks to TikTok: it’s possible!

Working a Wes Montgomery lick thanks to TikTok: it's possible!

I humbly admit that I go on TikTok to change my mind and...lose some time. But the truth is you can even find interesting things there sometimes! Yes, yes, I assure you.

I also regularly post guitar stuff, here is my account:

This morning I came across the following gem from the musician Richard Pena (richardpenamusic.com) which I didn't know existed until now. The musician plays a lick of Wes Montgomery that blew me away:

So I grabbed my archtop and worked on it until I could decipher it.

The chord sequence is: Gm7, C7#9, FMaj7

The lick is an m11 arpeggio which starts:

  • on the G, tonic of chord #1
  • on the Bb, minor 7th of chord #2
  • on the D, sixth of chord #3

I enjoyed it and I also sweated a lot to deconstruct this lick to be able to play it. In fact I am fascinated by this harmonic tool where you make an arpeggio start on a different note than the fundamental of the chord.

Until the next chronicle, keep on playing the guitar!

Pierre Journel.
